Trip to Guangzhou

On the 20th of October, I got to accompany Alex and the XC team to Guangzhou, Guangdong for the school Conference Championships. More photos from that event will show up here soon.

We took the train from HK about 2 hours northwest. It was a semi high speed rail line that traveled about 140 kph (88mph). Kind of an old train but comfortable and easy.

Guangzhou is very industrial. Quite a few factories producing all kinds of products. As such, the pollution has a reputation for being quite bad. In the first picture, if you look to the right hand side, you can tell that the air is kind of brown. Welcome to the mainland.

Supposedly, the pollution has lessened quite a bit since they held the Asian Games last year. As they did in Beijing, they shut down all of the factories a few weeks before the Games to improve the air quality before the crowds showed up. From what I've heard, they never let the most prolific polluters reopen. Instead, they made them move out to the country side. Welcome to the Chinese government.

Guangzhou in the afternoon. Reminds me of Tatooine.

The Cross Country team.

The Host School. American School in Guangzhou.

Water feature near the train station.
